STEP 1:
This link are my surveys results-
STEP 2:
I want to review my animation project by making a written report. The reasons behind this are because I find it easier to convey my thoughts in text compared to verbally.
My work was uploaded to YouTube and shared on social media sites such as Facebook. I also sent it to some specific people in hope that they would participate in my survey, not everyone did but I still managed to receive 15 responses. If I would like to reach a wider audience I could share it on more social platforms and enter it in competitions.
To receive feedback I created a survey, it can be found on a separate blog post. The criteria for my survey was the following; genre and audience, content and narrative, characters, techniques and aesthetic of the animation.
Q1-3 Age, gender and occupation: 86.67% of my survey participants were aged 16-20 and college students. 73.33% were male. This is good as it means that I have received my target audiences response.
Q4 Genre: The genre of my ESting is a comedy, so the fact that 66.67% of my participants said they found elements of the animation comedic shows we stuck to the conventions of this genre and succeeded in this area.
Q5 Age range: The results for this vary, with about 1/3 saying it is suitable for any age and 2/3 saying it is suitable for ages over 13. The target audience we decided to build our ESting around was young adults. So while we could reach out for people younger than our target audience, this means that they are not excluded.
Q6 Narrative: Everyone understood the basic premise behind the animation, a man falls off a rood. However not everyone understood everything about it, for example the character getting bored while falling. The answers for this question weren't as detailed as others (the majority being "a man falls of a roof"). Because of this I am unsure if people understood everything about the animation or just simplified their answer. Because of the majority of the answers just being about a man falling off a roof however, I am inclined to believe we did not succeed in getting the full idea across to our audience.
Q7 Style: Everyone who answered knew that it was a stop motion animation, apart from one person who thought I was asking what genre the animation was, and one person who didn't know the correct terminology. Seeing how the brief was to create a 10 second animation, our chosen style stop-motion, we were successful in fulfilling this brief.
Q8 Character: Only one person had a negative opinion on the character we chose. The majority of comments where that he was funny and fitted the role. Therefore I think we did a good job choosing the character, 9 out of 10 people liking him is a good fraction.
Q9 Technical: Only 13.33% of the participants thought the animation didn't run smoothly. I am not 100% sure but I believe that the bit that "ruins" the fluidity of the animation is the opening scene. As you can see below, there are clear creases in the green screen which created a dark shadow around the character as he moves, making it harder to become immersed. But I would still say we, overall, made a smooth running animation; due to so few saying otherwise.
Q10 Appearance & Creativity: The majority of people thought that the animation was creative, however could have been improved visually by making it more vibrant. I agree with this statement as the only vibrant colours in the animation is the blue sky and purple from the E4 logo. If I were to reshoot this, I would possibly dress the character in more vibrant colours and have vibrant objects fall with him.
STEP 3:
When making my ESting I did not face any legal issues however we went over our £5 budget as we spent £20. When filming we managed are time well. We were able to film our re-shoots in about half an hour and left multiple lessons for editing.
When it comes down to filming we managed our time well, completing filming and editing before the deadline. We did however reshoot, this did not affect us meeting the deadline.
The ESting we created has met the requirements of the brief. When filming we made sure to take 120 photos so that the animation would be 10 seconds long. It is also very clear that it is a stop-motion animation made for the E4 channel.
I gained my feedback by creating a survey and sending it out to friends and family. Thankfully all responses to the survey were serious and could be used as feedback. I have taken the feedback into consideration so that if we were to recreate our animation I know what to work on to improve.
In this topic I have learned a lot about the different types of animation and the difficult process behind even a short and "simple" animation. I was also surprised as I did not feel like working to a brief restricted my ideas or creativity. At first I did struggle to come up with an idea but that was more due to a case of "writer's block" than restriction.
I think I would be a suitable candidate for work in the media industry, seeing how working to a brief is common and I didn't struggle too much with coming up with ideas.
I personally didn't enjoy the animation unit. I think it is just a topic that doesn't really interest me as much as others so would rather work in a different part of the media industry.
