Photo Connotation Exercise

PURITY
This image uses flowers/nature to connote purity as well as the colour white. The contrast between the white flower and dark background draws attention to the flower, representing yin and yang (the good withing the bad). The high angle creates a sense of vulnerability while the use of a close up creates a sense of importance, drawing attention to the flower.

FRIENDSHIP
In this photo we used a  medium POV shot to create a sense of belonging. The natural lighting from the sun connotes happiness. The subjects positioning makes them appear relaxed, connoting friendship, as you probably wouldn't sit this way with strangers.

POVERTY
The close up we used for this photo creates a sense of intimacy, we are seeing a mans wallet from the POV of someone else. The high angle connotes weakness, showing the emptiness of his wallet isn't a good thing and it's because he is poor. The plain colours as the background helps draw the eye to the black wallet. The colour black connotes unhappiness and the subject being off centre suggests that something is wrong.

LOVE
Holding hands is a classic sign of romance, however the close up helps increase the sense of intimacy within this shot. The different colour of blue jeans shows a connection between the two models but that one is feminine and the other is masculine. The pale blue nails also connotes femininity and the act to care. For this shot we used a low depth of field to create a softness to the photo as it connotes romance and also draws your eye to the hands.

FEAR
For this photo we underexposed it to achieve a dark and edgy feeling. The subject is wearing black and other dark colours connoting negative emotions such as sadness and depression. The subjects positioning connotes fear and vulnerability. Having a dark background as well as foreground connotes a sense of horror, the lack of sunlight makes the boy appear isolated which also contributes to fear/vulnerable.

  1. Hi Faye,

Great work here! Some of these photos are really well taken. It was clear some thought went into them. You have used vocabulary we have studied in class effectively. Make sure you describe what shot type each picture is and why that shot type was used.
